Use this guide when Create Transactions fails for Invoices, Sales Orders, Credit Memos, or related billing transactions generated from ZoneBilling subscriptions and charges.
Before you start
Make sure you have the access and information needed to troubleshoot effectively.
- Administrator access, or a role with permission to review ZoneBilling setup and NetSuite scripting configuration
- Access to the Create Transactions process details, script logs, or error message returned by the process
- Permission to review Subscriptions, Subscription Items, Charges, Customers, Billing Profiles, and transaction setup
- Access to relevant NetSuite configuration areas such as Custom Fields, Script Deployments, Workflows, and tax setup
How to troubleshoot Create Transactions errors
- Find the exact error message returned by the failed Create Transactions process.
- Identify the affected customer, subscription, transaction type, and billing profile.
- Check whether the issue is isolated to 1 record set or happens across many customers.
- Review transaction mappings, source field values, subsidiaries, item setup, tax behavior, and any custom scripts or workflows on the target transaction.
- Test with a smaller batch or a single customer when volume-related errors are suspected.
- After making changes, run Create Transactions again to confirm the issue is resolved.
Common errors and resolutions
You must enter at least one line item for this transaction
Error message: You must enter at least one line item for this transaction
This is a native NetSuite validation error. It means the transaction save was attempted, but NetSuite determined there were no valid transaction lines to save.
Most common root causes
- Tax nexus or form mismatch: NetSuite may try to switch transaction forms based on the billing or shipping address nexus. In a scripted background process, that kind of UI-driven form switch cannot be completed, which can prevent taxes and lines from being applied correctly.
- Address or alternate entity overrides: Values such as Ship to Alt Entity or Ship to address - line override may point to an address that triggers a different nexus, especially in cross-border or multi-subsidiary scenarios.
How to resolve it
First, attempt to create the transactions with the same customer, bill-to, and ship-to addresses in the UI. You should see a pop-up requesting a form change due to the Tax Nexus. This tells you that this is a form change issue. To resolve, try the following:
- Open the affected Subscription and Subscription Items.
- Temporarily clear Ship to Alt Entity and Ship to address - line override.
- Run Create Transactions again.
- If the transaction succeeds, review customer address setup, subsidiary alignment, and transaction form behavior for nexus-based switching.
Invalid Field Value for taxcode
Error message: INVALID_FLD_VALUE: You have entered an Invalid Field Value [Value] for the following field: taxcode
This error means a value sent to the NetSuite taxcode field is not valid in that field context.
Most common root causes
- Charge Field Definition and Transaction Charge Map mismatch: The source field type does not match the target NetSuite field type. For example, a Tax Schedule value may be mapped into a Tax Code field even though those are different record/value types.
- Inactive source value: The mapped tax-related value or source charge field is inactive.
How to resolve it
- Review the applicable Transaction Charge Map.
- Confirm the source Charge Field Definition returns the same type of value expected by the target
taxcodefield. - Verify the referenced tax value is active.
- Re-run Create Transactions after updating the mapping.
Invalid Field Value for another field
Error message: INVALID_FLD_VALUE: You have entered an Invalid Field Value [Value] for the following field: [field_id]
This indicates the process tried to populate a field on the target transaction with a value that is invalid, incompatible, inactive, missing, or unavailable in the current transaction context.
Most common root causes
- Transaction Charge Map and Charge Field Definition mismatch: The source data type does not match the destination field type.
- Inactive field or source value: The referenced field or value exists but is inactive.
- Undefined or null value: The mapping passes no usable value into a field that requires one.
- Subsidiary incompatibility: The value is valid in general, but not for the subsidiary on the target transaction.
- Segment restrictions: Department, Class, or Location values may be restricted to a different subsidiary.
- Item restrictions: The item on the charge or subscription may not be available to the transaction subsidiary.
How to resolve it
- Identify the exact field ID shown in the error.
- Confirm the field is active and available on the target record type.
- Check that the mapped source value is populated and valid.
- If the field is item, department, class, or location, verify the value is available to the transaction subsidiary.
- Review the related Transaction Charge Map and Charge Field Definition for type mismatches or mismatched field IDs for referenced ZAB charge fields.
Value length is over 10MB
Error message: Value length is over 10MB
This is a NetSuite platform limit. It happens when too much data is passed in a single Map/Reduce value during Create Transactions processing.
Most common root causes
- High-volume consolidated billing causes too many charges or subscriptions to collapse into 1 processing group.
- The resulting serialized payload for a single reduce key exceeds NetSuite's 10 MB limit.
How to resolve it
- Reduce the batch size by narrowing the filters on the Create Transactions page.
- Test with a smaller customer group, billing profile, or date range.
- Use the ZoneBilling Consolidation group feature so charges are split into manageable processing groups.
ZB_UNABLE_TO_FIND_TRANSACTION_GROUP
Error message: ZB_UNABLE_TO_FIND_TRANSACTION_GROUP
This means the transaction grouping logic could not match the expected group during processing.
Most common root causes
- Multiple subscriptions are consolidating under the same bill-to customer, but their billing profiles do not match.
How to resolve it
- Identify the subscriptions being consolidated for the affected bill-to customer.
- Review the billing profile on each subscription.
- Align the billing profiles so all subscriptions intended to consolidate use a consistent setup.
- Run Create Transactions again.
The total can not be negative
Error message: USER_ERROR: The total can not be negative.
This is a native NetSuite validation error. NetSuite will not save a Sales Order or Invoice if the final total is below zero.
Most common root causes
- External tax calculation drives the total negative: A transaction with both positive and negative lines may net to zero or near zero before tax. If an external tax engine calculates a small negative tax amount, the final total becomes negative and NetSuite rejects the save.
How to resolve it
- Create a manual test transaction in the NetSuite UI using the same customer and line pattern.
- Calculate tax and compare the pre-tax and post-tax totals.
- If tax causes the total to drop below zero, adjust the billing scenario so the transaction does not save with a negative total.
- Where appropriate, separate offsetting or negative amounts into a Credit Memo flow instead of a standard invoice flow.
SSS_INVALID_SRCH_COL
Error message: SSS_INVALID_SRCH_COL: An nlobjSearchColumn contains an invalid column, or is not in proper syntax: {fieldID}
This is a NetSuite SuiteScript search error. It means a search column references a field ID that NetSuite cannot recognize or use.
Most common root causes
- Misaligned Charge Field Definition: A custom field ID was changed, renamed, or replaced in NetSuite, but the related Charge Field Definition in ZoneBilling still points to the old value.
How to resolve it
- Note the field ID shown in the error.
- Open the related Charge Field Definition.
- Compare the configured field ID with the current NetSuite field ID.
- Update the Charge Field Definition if it references an outdated or invalid field.
- Retry Create Transactions.
SSS_INSTRUCTION_COUNT_EXCEEDED / Script Execution Statement Count Exceeded
Error message: SSS_INSTRUCTION_COUNT_EXCEEDED or Script Execution Statement Count Exceeded
This is a NetSuite governance error. It means the script hit the platform's instruction limit before processing completed.
Most common root causes
- Complex processing combined with custom scripts or workflows on the target transaction record
- Heavy custom logic firing when ZoneBilling attempts to create Invoices, Sales Orders, or Credit Memos
How to resolve it
- Review all custom scripts and workflows on the target transaction type.
- Temporarily disable non-Zone and non-native customizations.
- Run Create Transactions again.
- If the process succeeds, re-enable the customizations 1 at a time and test between each change.
- When the error returns, the most recently re-enabled customization is likely contributing to the issue.
- If needed, open a support case with the ZoneBilling support team for deeper review.
SSS_TIME_LIMIT_EXCEEDED / SSS_SEARCH_TIMEOUT / ABORT_SEARCH_EXCEEDED_MAX_TIME
Error messages: SSS_TIME_LIMIT_EXCEEDED, SSS_SEARCH_TIMEOUT, or ABORT_SEARCH_EXCEEDED_MAX_TIME
These errors indicate the process exceeded NetSuite time limits, often during searches or record-intensive transaction creation.
Most common root causes
- Large usage or count datasets
- Broad search criteria or too many records in 1 run
- Custom scripts or workflows adding significant processing time during record creation
How to resolve it
- Review and temporarily disable non-Zone custom scripts and workflows on the target transaction.
- Reduce the volume of records processed in a single run.
- Test again with narrower filters.
- If the issue persists, collect the error details and open a support case with ZoneBilling support.
Permissions error accessing the Create Transactions page
Typical symptom: The user cannot open the Create Transactions Suitelet, or receives a NetSuite permissions or authorization error.
This usually means the user role is not included in the Suitelet deployment audience.
Most common root causes
- The Create Transactions script deployment does not include the affected role on the Audience subtab.
- The user is using a role without sufficient access to the underlying script or records.
How to resolve it
- Log in with an Administrator role.
- Open the Script Deployment for the Create Transactions Suitelet.
- Review the Audience settings.
- Add the required role, or allow all appropriate roles based on your organization's access model.
- Save the deployment and test access again.
