A Subscription represents the overall contract purchased by a customer, and the child Subscription Item(s) represent the specific product or service that was sold (i.e. a portion of the contract).
Charges are related to a specific Subscription Item, and represent the contracted pricing and billing configuration for a given contract line.
Before you begin
Subscriptions
- A Subscription is always tied to a native NetSuite Customer.
- Ensure that Customer Records have been added to NetSuite before creating Subscriptions.
- Subscriptions can be grouped together using a Master Contract. This allows customers to easily manage Subscriptions that share the same contract, minimum commitments, and Charge Schedules.
- A Subscription should not contain more than 20+ linked Subscription Items. For additional assistance, please reach out to the Zone & Co support team.
Subscription Items
- A Subscription Item must be tied to a single Subscription.
- Items sold to a customer are grouped together through Subscriptions.
- Review the Rate Types guide to understand the different configuration options you can choose on the Subscription Item and example use cases.
- The Items used on a Subscription Item must be For Sale or Resale. Item Groups are not supported
- If you select an Item with the Subtype ‘For Purchase’, you will receive an error message.
Key Characteristics
- The Charge Schedule on the Subscription may be passed over to the Subscription Item (If Inherit from Subscription is selected on the Subscription Item).
- A Subscription can be used as an ongoing record for your Customer; it can hold information about a customer’s current Subscription Items, next year’s Subscription Items, and future Renewals.
- Subscription Items are ultimately configured to create Charges in a way that prepares them to accurately map to a native NetSuite Transaction (Sales Order, Invoice, or Cash Sale).
This image highlights the Subscription and Subscription Item relationship. Subscription Items are always stored on their Parent record.
