Rate Types

A Rate Type defines the type of Charges a Subscription Item will have: fixed-recurring charges, a one-time charge, or variable components that influence charges within a specified period. A Rate Type is a mandatory field on a Subscription Item.

The required fields on the Subscription Item will change depending on the Rate Type selected. Certain Subscription Item fields cater to certain Rate Types, meaning depending on the Rate Type selected, not all fields on the Subscription Item are required. There are currently 6 Rate Types available.

 

Before you Begin

Be sure to answer these questions about the Subscription item:

  • Determine if the quantity or the amount to Charge will vary from period to period. If so, a Rate Type that captures variable usage might be appropriate. Before using a Rate Type that has a variable component, read our guide on Usage and the overall Rating Process.
  • If the Subscription Item will only capture a single Charge, a One-Time Charge might be an appropriate Rate Type to select
  • If the Subscription Item requires charging different Items, review the Fixed (Recurring) & Usage (Variable) Rate Type section to learn more about handling multiple Charge Items under the same Subscription Item
  • If you are building a Subscription Item that offers an upfront cost for a number of Included Units, which are then depleted throughout a specified period, review the Prepaid Item Quantity Rate Type
  • If your Subscription Item consists of an upfront dollar amount that can be drawn down on by multiple usage types and charges, a Prepaid Subscription (Amount) Rate Type might be a good fit
