Prepaid Rate Types support scenarios in which Subscription Items must account for a prepaid Amount or Quantity. Depending on the Prepaid Rate Type selected, usage will deplete the total prepaid Amount or Quantity across multiple service periods.
Before you Begin
- Included Units are leveraged in both Rate Type configurations but treated differently, learn more below
- The Subscription Item Prepaid Subtab has fields that are important to both Prepaid Rate Types
- For Prepaid Subscription Amount Rate Types, Burst Fields are configured on the variable Subscription Items that draw down on the Prepaid Subscription Amount

Replenishment Frequency and Interval
The Replenishment Frequency and Interval fields allow you to set a cadence for how often Included Units are replenished into the Customer’s available balance for the Subscription Item. This enables you to give them additional Included Units during the life of the Subscription Item at predefined intervals (as opposed to a one-time Included Units value).
- With this feature, unused Prepaid Units roll over to the next period for the life of the Subscription Item unless a Unit Expiration Date is set.
Applicable for the the following Rate Types:
- Prepaid Item Quantity
- Prepaid Subscription (Amount)
Configuration
Outcome: After one year, the 500 Included Units are replenished
Use Case
A customer pays $10,000 upfront for data storage (Gigabytes). The prepaid fee of $10,000 is for 500 Included Units (representing 500GB of storage). The 500 Included Units are replenished monthly, and unused units roll over into the next period; they can accumulate from period to period and only expire after one year.

Usage Detail
Post-Rating:
- Note that there was no usage between 6/1-6/31. The 500 Included Units roll over to the next period; starting 7/1, there are now 1000 Included Units available
- 1,100 units are consumed between 7/1-7/31.
- No offset Charge is generated for the extra usage (quantity: 100) because it is not covered by the Prepaid (Included) Units. The outcome is a Charge for the overage ($3,500).
Units Expiration Frequency and Interval
With the Units Expiration Frequency and Units Expiration Interval fields, you can determine when the Included Units expire, eliminating their availability for subsequent periods.
This feature provides the option to set specific time periods for when Included Units are available, as opposed to units that never expire. Setting this field dictates a "use it or lose it" expiration date for the Prepaid Units. The expiration date is relative to the purchase or replenishment date of each Prepaid (Included) Units batch.
Applicable for the the following Rate Types:
- Prepaid Item Quantity
- Prepaid Subscription (Amount)
Rating Priority
Prepaid Subscription Items have a “built in” Rating Priority; they will always be Rated after all other Variable Charges. However, you can prioritize the order of Rating for other Usage Subscription Items amongst themselves, whether or not you are using the Prepaid Subscription Rate Type. Learn more here.
